The conventions of film opening

  • Introducing genre:

Films openings sometimes tends to let the audience know what type of movie it is. This scene from the opening of 'The Matrix' shows the viewers that the movie is belongs to the genre of Sci-Fi by the codes on the screen and the colour choice of black and green.

  • Title sequence:

In the opening of 'Fight club', it simply introduces the name of the movie and who is playing the characters. This is effective because it shows the audience all the big names that are in the movie and what type of character they are going to play.

  • Studio Ident:

The movie 'Game of death' introduces the studio that made the production, it illustrates the type of movies that the studio produces.

  • Carrying the title sequence/ Introducing character:

The opening scene to 'The taking of pelham 123' carries the tile sequence throughout the scenes where the character is at the train station. The title on the screening tends to resemble the actions of the train by     using a slight zoom and moving quickly to the side. It also introduces the type of characters and shows a clear format of binary oppositions between the two.

  • Set the scene/ Sets the atmosphere:

When the character is introduced in the opening of 'Saw', it shows the setting of the character and creates a dark atmosphere. Giving the audience a hint about what type of genre it is.

Another aspects of fim openings is it can show the audience the genre of the film and tells them what to expect from the film. In this case the opening scene of Sherlock Holmes gives the indication that Holmes is running away, whilst Watson is loading a gun, this instantly tells that the genre is an action and crime based film.

Another convention of film opening is the carrying of the title sequence. In Skyfall the texts of the film are floating in the water, in order to give an effect in the opening of the film.

Title of the Film:
The title of the film is a convention used to introduce the film, in this clip the Harry Potter title is shown in the start of the film.
Sets the atmosphere of the mood:
In Dark Knight the atmosphere of the mood is set wiht a blaze in the opening scenes, with a bank robbery taking place, people being killed and disaster being struck. This shows the atmosphere and the emotions are running high straight away.

Studio idents at the start:
Studio idents are always introduced before the the film begins to show the creators of the film. In the Simpsons Movie 20th Century Fox is known for the creation of the animated film.
