Evaluation: Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation: Question 2

How does the media product represent particular social groups?

Representation of Age

Representation consists of seven different areas which are: Gender, Age, Social Class, Sexuality, Ability/Disability, Regional Identity and Ethnicity

This mood board is to show the representation of age, as this is the social group we have chosen in our film opening, specifically teenagers.

The first stereotypical view associated with teenagers binge drinking, as this is very common, as it show teenagers love to party, and have a good time. In our film opening we have represented this in a negative way. Another stereotype we used is romance, as sex is another thing related with teenagers, though in our film opening we have portrayed this in a positive way, as the couple in the video are enjoying time together. The mood board also displays a teenage girls making an informal gesture, this is to show the rebellious behaviour teenagers possess, we used this in our film opening when the character becomes angry after seeing the text. We used Converses for our costume, as it is a popular fashion footwear with teens, this is done to represent age. the mood board also contains a picture of someone holding a Blackberry. Blackberry is a popular technological device for teenagers as it allows users to go on softwares such as BBM, thus we used product placement to represent the stereotype of age. Finally the last image is the knife image, we used this in our film opening to represent age by linking knife crime teens.

Analysing feedback: The feedback that was received gave me an insight about the representation that was shown in the film opening. From since we started defining the representations in TV Drama such as Life on Mars, we, as a group, have obtained the similar skill of representing our social group- in this case it was teenagers. From the hit TV show Waterloo Road, we managed to adopt the skills of representing teenagers in a 'negative' way via the clothes the main character was wearing, the close up shots to show dark expressions and the aggressive gestures such as throwing the jacket about.

In most thriller films, the creators tend to reach a younger audience such as Final Destination. They usually do this through the costumes and actors they pick for the movie. For instance the movie Obsessed 2009,  used a popular star such as Beyonce to reach a young audience in order for them to watch it. With our film, we also wanted to reach a younger audience because it was easier to act and direct seeing how we are young ourselves. Our sub genre is romance, this will easily attract a wider range of females in the audience because it has been proven in statistics that women prefer romance than men. Also, it attracts people that are in relationships. This movie will have the audience gripping their partner in suspense and fear.

Here is our film opening uploaded onto Youtube

Evaluation: Question One

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation: Question Two

How does your media product represent particular social groups? The feedback that i recieved helped me see how we portrayed our character in our thriller opening. Seeing as the character was represented in a negative aspect we tried to link it back to our pervious lessons were we learnt about representation. This was shown in the thriller opening were the protagonist was holding a knife, showing the viewers how teengers are represented in the 21st century.

Evaluation: Question Three

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation: Question Four

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience that we aimed our movie at are teenagers. The sub genre that we choice for our thriller was Romance, this was to attract a wide female audience as it has been proven that more women are interested Romance due to the statistics. In general, most thrillers are aimed at young people by the representation through the four media aspects Camera, Editing, Mise en Scene and Sound.

In order to reach our target audience, I have decided to upload the film opening onto Youtube so the viewers can be able to access easily

Evaluation Question 1

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL PRODUCTS?

I looked at the film Obsessed which we took inspiration from after analyzing the film because it was the same genre, Romantic Thriller, which we wanted our film to be, it was also aimed at similar audience. From this film, our media product has developed forms and conventions of Romantic Thriller movies. Specifically looking at the camera shots, angles and focuses, in the film Obsessed, establishing shots are widely used so we used establishing shots of Ben throughout the beginning to show the audience exactly what is happening which is him being drunk in a local park. Another shot type which is used throughout Obsessed is a close up, low angle with a deep focus on the characters faces to show their facial expressions so we have used this convention of real media product, to convey our characters emotions to the audience e.g when the main character which is played by Ben is hallucinating, you can clearly see his facial expression in which he shows signs of confusion and disturbance.

We also decided to develop forms and conventions of Romantic/Thriller through the sound we used in our opening. Our opening uses soft, calm yet suspenseful type of music throughout which is evident in most Romantic Thrillers such as Obsessed, The Tourist and Unfaithful.

Through the editing, we used conventions of Thrillers specifically looking at the film Obsessed which we analysed. We decided to use conventions which are already evident in Thrillers such as the use of match cuts, close ups and establishing shots. We however challenged the conventions of Thriller films as we decided to create a montage where we used cross cutting which isn’t a typical convention of science fiction films so we have created our own, unique method of conveying time to our audience, this adds suspense, as the audience would like to figure out what had happend earlier on in the film which is typically explained later on in the film.

As for the title sequence, we decided do go with the traditional conventions of film openings such as placing the company idents at the beginning, furthermore we carried on with conventional openings such as putting the write names in order and making it look professional. The following list shows the convention and order of title sequences which we have used in our film opening.

Additional Information:

We represented teenagers through the four aspects: Camera, Editing, Mise en scene and Sound. Firstly we used a range of camera techniques such as Close ups and establishing shots to show the face expressions on the character and to show the authority or importance of the character. It suggests that teenagers have more power in today's society. The cuts in the opening gives the film a quick pace and shows that teenagers are often physically rough, the clothes shows the youth of the main character and the musical score is very dark to show it is a reflection of his emotions.

Evaluation Question 5

An interview conducted by me and Rahi, we interviewed the two main characters of the movie (And The Cause Was Love),

Additional:

We made sure that we stuck to the conventions our audience would be expecting. Such as Levi-Strauss’ theory of binary opposites, including good vs evil, hero vs villain (or in our case victim vs murderer. We also followed this theme through to production by using light (high Key) vs dark (low key) in the lighting to anchor the message of good vs evil. We also used common themes they would expect to see like ‘death’. We had a particular murderer seeking death for a particular reason which is a convention of  Thriller/Horror. We appealed to their pleasures by exploiting their fears. People go to see a Thriller/Horror filming because they expect to be scared, they expect to be confused and worried as to what will happen next.

Evaluation Question 6

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

During the construction of our film we learnt how to use many different types of technology. When making our preliminary film we learnt how to write a script properly, which was easy to follow for our actors, although we didn’t use a script during the making of our 2 minute film opening this is a skill we will take with us and possibly use next year. We also learnt how to set up and use cameras and tri-pods correctly. At first we found this hard, especially when trying to get good cuts in preparation for editing however through practice in our preliminary task when it came to filming for our opening we found this alot easier and have ended up with really good cuts and editing that ran smoothly.

In order to be able to edit correctly getting the right visual image we had to become familiar with apple macs and the software that does this. iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Camtasia, Motion have both played a role in the making of our preliminary and opening two minute film. Using these programmes was complicated at first, however we are now able to use them to their best quality, we feel this is shown throughout our film and our skill level increase is shown clearly in the difference between both of our films. Being able to cut, add and link clips together is also a skill we have picked up along the way of the editing process, though Phoebe was already familiar with how to do this she feels that her skill level has increased and now feels more confident with using the software. Both Rahi and Ben and i are also now fully aware of how to use the software confidently and this has shown in our film.Creating our film has made us more familiar with the software and enabled us to add sounds. Another programme we are now able to use is Prezi. From watching the online video on how to create something a little more exciting than a slide show we have created a Prezi to show our evaluation, we all found this easy to get along with as it was well explained to us, other groups have also used this site and therefore were on hand to help us with any questions.

Feedback For Rough Cut

Producing the distribution

For the producing the distribution company, we used the software called 'Motion'. This software is good for designing writing where you can add many effects such as bubbles and smoke. We used the smoke effect and flashing images to show that the genre is thriller and that some characters in the movie are disturbed and crazy. This gives the audience a little idea about what the movie is going to be about.
