More Analysis of Thrillers

Since starting our own thiller opening, I've done nothing but access the type of themes and structure other thrillers use. Everything is done for a reason in the thriller, up till the camera techniques and the clothes they are wearing. The movie I want to talk about is the Grudge, this is a prime example of a movie that holds many techniques that makes it a exciting thriller.

  • Camera-  The opening starts with an slow establishing shot, showing the buildings and the surroundings. It adopts an classic opening by showing the city and the atmosphere of the potential main character is in. After showing the surroundings, it then slowly pans to the character at the balcony but only shows the back of his head. From this, we can suggest that the character is deceitful and not trustworthy. We can also suggest that he is up to something and somehow depressed by the environment he belongs to, all these are possible aspects of this minor camera technique. It leaves the audience with little knowledge about the character and keeps them deeply intrigued. The close ups on his face shows that he is weary and anxious, this suggests that he is not comfortable around the presence of the girl or the city of that matter. Leading the audience to think, that he could be a murder or the victim of an approaching assault. We tried to adopt this technique during our filming but we didnt have enough time or knowledge of how to do it. Even with the ones that we tried to do, it didn't seem to satisfy us.

  • Mise en Scene- The colour choice is this scene is deeper than you think. The fact that he is wearing a gray top and black trousers shows the physical reflection of his emotions.Gray usually symbolises depression and emptiness. Black represents dark, hate and evil. Whereas the girl is surrounded by the colour white. Shows the clear contrast between the characters intentions, we can suggest that the girl is pure and innocent due to all the glittering white she's wrapped in and that the man is mentally unstable/ depressed by the gray top and could be a danger to her or himself by the colour black.

  • In our thriller opening, we also adopted this technique whilst recording. In the scene where Phoebe and I are walking together, I happen to be wearing bright colours like Blue and white to show that the character was happy and outgoing. However when I am walking around the pathway drunk, I wear dark colours like black and red to show the complete contrast between the two characters.
